President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that the 2016/2017 Npower volunteers be absorbed into the federal civil service. According to the president, since they have worked as volunteers, it would be appropriate for the federal government to offer them permanent employment. He pointed that having worked for a long time as volunteers, it will be kind of the federal government to offer them permanent employment before ending the program. He made the statement today at the state house Abuja.
The Npower volunteer scheme is one of the federal government social investment programs which began in December 2016. The president stated that absorbing the volunteers is a big way to cub the huge unemployment rate in the country. The president is of the view that if the 200,000 youths that were absorbed into the Npower program were pushed back to the society after 2 years, the country cannot claim to be making progress.
The president also pointed that there has never been any empowerment or employment process in the history of Nigeria that is as transparent and merit oriented as the Npower program. He advice government at all levels to adopt the Npower method of recruitment in their future employment and empowerment schemes. He did not fail to mention the tremendous impact the program have had on the lives of young Nigerians and their families in terms of poverty reduction, improved livelihood and human capital development.
